Has GDPR Endangered Our Privacy?

It’s been a while now since the new privacy laws including GDPR was enforced in May 2018 and we all raced like mad to make our businesses compliant.

I’m Beginning To Wonder if I’m Giving Away More Privacy Than Ever!

Every website I visit I have to click my way through any number of notices – a privacy policy, cookie policy, terms of engagement and say that I agree to them.

Do I read this long list of caveats? No, of course I don’t.

Can You Imagine Being the Person That Reads Everything?

“I want to buy some shoes but before I do, let me check that I agree with the terms of using this website”

10 minutes later

“No, I don’t agree, let me find a different website.”

I’m Clicking My Whole Life Away

No, I’m not that person. I just click and agree my whole life away and I wonder exactly what I am agreeing to.

Just how many times over the last couple of months have you clicked “I agree” to a huge box obliterating your screen just to get to a tiny nugget of information or maybe something as insignificant as shaving foam! (I’m not a big buyer of shaving foam by the way that was just a for instance – in case you were wondering.)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but it feels like, instead of a website having to be decent (hopefully) and stay within some guidelines because if they don’t and I find out they might get into trouble somehow, things have changed. Now they can get away with anything because I’ve ticked the box to say it’s okay without even reading it. Seriously, I don’t know what I’ve agreed to recently at all!

I’m Still Serious About My GDPR Responsibilities

Obviously, I have a cookie policy, privacy policy and terms of engagement on my website. I have my Data Protection Licence and regularly read the newsletter from the ICO.

In fact, setting up a legal and GDPR compliant mailing list is one of my core services. However, I do not, and will not have an over the top pop-up that you have no chance of reading through before you land on one of my pages.

Neither does the ICO. They have a cookie policy pop-up and that’s it.

What Is On Your Website?

What will happen if I land on your website? Do you have a massive pop-up box or a straightforward link to the cookie-policy with everything else in a link in your footer? Is it easy for me to view your website? Because, if it is, I’m more likely to read what you have to say or buy from you.

GDPR Is In Place To Protect Our Privacy

GDPR is there to protect our policy. As business owners therefore, it is up to us to be responsible and protect the privacy of our website users. In the blog The One Thing You Need To Know About GDPR I emphasise we should treat others as we want to be treated. If we do this we will be more successful.

3 Reasons I Won’t Judge Your Spelling

Please excuse the spelling and handwriting

So say many of my clients. I really don’t mind some dodgy spelling though, in fact, I welcome it and this is the reason why.

Bad spelling is often a sign of a creative mind

Our minds work in odd ways and it seems that people who are very visual find the words on a page thing a bit of a puzzle. They also find the English language very odd. Two too and to or there and their, I won’t go on.

I wouldn’t want you to judge my drawing or painting

I know a lot of people with a talent that astounds me. They draw, paint, make things and have endless ideas. I really wouldn’t want them to judge (or even see) my drawings. I can make it as far as stick men but that’s about as far as it goes. We all have different things we find easy so we shouldn’t look down on others who find these things hard.

Its My Job, Not Yours

My job is to produce a well presented document which has accurate spelling and grammar. I expect you to get lost in your work and keep your creative flow.

My Tip To You

Always spell a word as it sounds. It may not be correctly spelt but everyone reading it will understand what you mean. And apostrophes (‘) – if you’re not sure, don’t. This is because people are more likely to notice a wrong one rather than a missing one.

You can also use a programme on your pc such as Grammarly.com which automatically highlights any spelling or grammatical mistakes and helps you fix them.

Is Spelling Important?

Yes and no. Spelling helps people understand us. When writing for ourselves and people who know and understand us already it’s not important. If we need to fill in a form, or make an impression on someone we don’t know, it’s more important to get it right. In that case, it is better to ask a family member friend or VA to help you rather than spend hours stressing out about it.

I work for creative people, who prefer visual things to the written word, people with lots of ideas and not a lot of time. If I can help you therefore, either with your social media, some typing or transcription, please call me on 07974 701526 or email to lizthewhiz@lovetyping.co.uk I will be glad to help.

Help with Spelling

Auto post to Instagram

Posting to Instagram can be a faff.

Until recently even when using Buffer and Hootsuite you still needed to go in and post manually after a reminder.

Not Any More!

You can now post directly but there are three things you need to ensure to post directly;

1️⃣ Your IG profile needs to be a business profile

2️⃣ You need to go into settings on that profile and do a whole link through to a Facebook page thing to enable direct posting.

3️⃣Your picture must have a ratio of 4:5 or 1:1.91, easily adjusted in your photo editor.

Only one image can be posted at a time, but you can add text.

I’m delighted by it. It takes all of the faff out auto-posting to IG and you can post from any device.

So, if Instagram is part of your marketing strategy, it got a whole lot easier!

Will you use this facility? Do you use it already?
